Sydney – Day 1 (Cockatoo Island)

Today was our first full day in Sydney. My dad’s flight got delayed a day due to mechanical problems, but the purser on our flight from Mebourne (his name’s big D) helped us out by talking to the hotel, and we actually got to stay in my dad’s room for free because they had to have it booked for him anyway since the flight got in at 6AM. Dad was pretty surprised to see us there! Fortunately he was well rested and ready to go because he had his break at the end of his flight.

We ran into Elder Wen from Hong Kong and Elder Vermellen from South Africa that we had met the day before at the YSA fun night. When I found out that Elder Wen was from Hong Kong AND he went to BYU-Hawaii I knew he would know my buddy NIck Kieren who was my roommate in college and was a missionary in Hong Kong. Haha, I love when you find out you have a mutual friend and you both love the guy. He was stoked when he found out I knew Nick.

Check it out!!!! We made it to the Opera House! It was awesome! Now I can say, “I went to the Sydney Opera house.” Ok that wasn’t as epic as I thought. So Bryce told me that the opera house was built because of an architectural competition that took place. The winner was allowed to build his design but he later found out that he couldn’t build it to perfection. There weren’t enough funds to do so. It was just too expensive, and it was also just hard to build in general so the guy got mad and left the country and has not been back to see it finished. Isn’t that crazy!! It’s way cool! I am going to write him and tell that i think it’s cool!

The competition was back in 1959. Those artist types. Way too temperamental. Get over it already.

Sydney Harbour Bridge. The weather was perfect for the entire time we were there.

When this painting is done it will be the biggest painting in the world!!!! (made with chalk, hahaha)

This guy has been working on this for a long time in front of the Circular Quay. He is an Italian guy. It is going to be a large Where’s Wally? painting.

We didn’t see any Cockatoos on Cockatoo Island. These birds were all over and got very upset whenever we walked by. haha

We got a free ferry ride to Cockatoo Island because of the art show that was going on.  The art was very ????

This is art!!!! 95% of the time I don’t understand art or why people think things like this is art. If people think this is fascinating they should go to DI. They could even buy the art. It would help out the church. Two birds with one stone. (well…ok…this picture is pretty cool)

  1. Pretty sure Dad gets that exact picture in front of the Opera House every time we're in Sydney!
